Nick Hornby – A long way down (06-030)

Hornby has done a great evolution as an author. His first book was autobiographical (Fever Pitch), his second one still had a lot of autobiographical elements (Hi-fidelity), but since then he manages to write best-selling novels, without actually using the same trick over again, like so many bestselling authors do.

The story starts with a strange event. Martin Sharp, former television celebrity has decided to take matters into his own hands and end his life on New Years Eve. He should have known better than to jump from a high building. He is not on his own. Three others had the exact same idea. The four of them exchange stories, but none of them jumps.

This is the start of the rest of their lives. And however little they have in common; they have a bond through that night. The unlikely friendship has to continue somehow.

The book then rolls on and it is very difficult to put down. Hornby manages to drag you in his characters, however little you have in common with them. Another great book by Hornby, certainly if the second layer that might not be obvious for everyone, makes you think about life in general and this weird situation in particular.

Ok. Bizar. Gisteravond eindelijk precies dit boek uitgelezen (al een paar maanden geleden gekocht, maar nog niet aan toegekomen)!

Mijn favoriete Hornby tot nu toe is trouwens About a boy. Alhoewel deze er ook zeer zeker mag zijn. En inderdaad; juist die 'tweede' laag in dit boek(en die zit ook in About a boy, vind ik) maakt het een must-read :)

Ook al vind ik 'about a boy' een goed boek, ik heb er niet zoveel mee als andere Hornby boeken. Zowel Fever Pitch als Hi-Fidelity waren een feest der herkenning. Misschien had ik bij About a boy nog wat moeite met complete fictie van hem. How to be good daarentegen vond ik geweldig, maar daar schijn ik weinig medestanders voor te hebben.

Fever Pitch vond ik ook geweldig en vooral erg humoristisch (waarschijnlijk omdat ik vaak de Nick ben en m'n vriend (nu dus Mat) de onbegrijpende vrouw is).

How to be good heb ik nog niet gelezen, maar hij ligt al klaar op de stapel 'still-to-be-read'. Maar eerst nog een paar Boudewijn Buch boeken ter voorbereiding op een bezoekje aan het Letterkundig museum :)

Herkenning doet veel in boeken. Al herken ik weinig in sommige klassiekers die ik gelezen heb.

Ik moet ook weer eens een Buch ter hand nemen. Heb er de laatste jaren toch nog weer een paar gekocht, maar dat is bij te veel schrijvers het geval. Eerst kopen en dan kijken wanneer je tijd hebt om te lezen.
