John Irving – Pension Grillparzer (06-087)

John Irving – Pension Grillparzer (06-087)

Like Penguin, Dutch publishing house De Bezige Bij considered it a great idea to publish some small books, low prized, hard cover, at one of their anniversaries, hoping to tempt a new public to start reading, I guess.

John Irving is known for his huge books, therefore he is not an obvious choice for a small book. Yet he did write some novels with writers in them. They write books as well, hence these stories from novels could stand alone as well. Pension Grillparzer is one of these them. Written by Garp, while the other story Interior Space was published first in Trying to Save Piggy Sneed.

Like with Theroux’ stories rereading Irving isn’t a punishment, so I enjoyed this booklet as much as I hoped.

You know, I actually liked "The Pension Grillparzer" better than I liked The World According to Garp. Perhaps not enough to buy it as a separate edition, but I definitely thought the story was better than the book.

Garp

It's been ages since I read Garp. I remember the story about the pension, but can't remember if it was better or worse than the book. I do remember enjoying it though. Have read his complete oeuvre since.
