Travel stories always work well when you're travelling. And I like the way he writes. I have read more of his (travel) books, but not until this one I realised how much he must have influenced me. Like I do, he can observe fellow travellers and make a whole lot out of nearly nothing. Which is interesting to read. His journey is nearly exclusive by train, starting of on the Orient express, through Asia until Japan and then back via the Siberia express. Very good literature. Recommendable for travel addicts as myself, but basically for everyone who likes a good book.
29. Ira Levin - Son of Rosemary
To start: I like Ira Levin. He has written some of the best books I have ever read. His power is that he writes little. Not until the second part of 'A kiss before dying' did I realise that in the first part the main charactre wasn't mentioned by name. Is it the same? Nowhere in 'The Stepford wifes' can you read what you see happen in the movie, though everyone draws the same conclusion. He writes little: 7 books in thirtysomething years. Unfortunately he decided to write a sequel to the one I liked least: Rosemary's baby. It's a good book, please don't get me wrong, but it's not his standard. Rosemary wakes up from a coma after twentysomething years and within a week is on tv and within a forthnight active as never before. Not realistic. Doug Copeland's 'Girlfriend in a coma' is much more up to scratch if it comes to that subject. But the story is good to read, you get curious and want to finish it fast, which I obviously did, though he disappointed me once more near the end. Unfortunately too predictable this book. Why cash in on a big hit so many years later? Then again, his disappointments are still a better read than most other thriller-authors I know. Judge for yourself, I'd say.
