One week on the road.

Positive:

* The road past the coast south of Sydney. Beautiful coastal road, plenty of nice views.

* The Snowy mountains. Okay, they're no comparison to the Alps, but it was worth taking a detour for.

* My very first breathanalyzer-test on easter saturday. I got a 'good on you' from the officer and was entitled to carry on. Apparently it's worth the effort doing these tests at two in the afternoon over here.

* Ouyen. Don't know how to pronounce the name, but it's a little ugly town in the middle of nowhere, the outback of Victoria. Ten minutes over there were enough inspiration for a story.

* The outback. Heard much about it, now I've seen some of it. Not much more than emptiness as far as you can see, just interrupted by the odd tree and some cattle, but you've got to see it to be able to judge it.

* The 'Fruit fly exclusion zone'. I have crossed the border of this area a few times while driving. Once I was even stopped there and this young lady was peeking through all the windows of my car, to double check if I wasn't smuggling any fruit into the zone. That way they apparently manage to keep a big part of the country free of the little flies. I was luckily entitled to keep my can of peaches.

* Adelaide. Beautiful city, many lovely Victorian buildings, nice atmosphere and people actually queuing at the busstop. Plenty to see and do, I'm here longer than expected, that's a compliment for the town.

* Victor Harbor, where a walk over a bridge to Granite Island was rewarded with the sighting of dozens of little blue penguins on their ways to their holes. Remains a fascinating view to see the little creatures wiggling past you, just a few meters away, after a day in the sea. Unfortunately it was prohibited to take pictures.

* Funny signs on the road. Even though there is no house to be seen within miles in any direction, let alone a community or an actual village, there was still a sign for a tennis club on the side of the road. I couldn't see any courts either, though they could have been hidden behind the trees.

* Number 33 is out now, even though I coincidentally missed out on both number 13 and 23.

* Bought 8 disposable razorblades, opened the bag and found out there were 9 of them!

* Northern tce in Adelaide. Museum, war memorial, state library, the Don Bradman collection, walk of fame, basically everything you want to know on one street.

Negative:

* Thredbo. Ugly purpose built resort in the mountains. Possibly one could survive there during the skiing season, but aoutside I just about managed an hour and a half, and that's mostly because I was forced to park the car at least a kilometer out of town.

* The only kangaroo's I saw on the road, where the dead ones next to the street. Three on the way here and counting...

* My first ever speeding fine. Apparently I was driving 74 in a 60 zone. I am not sure if I will pay the fine before I leave the country though.

* My disfunctional carradio. Replacing it turned out to be a much more complicated and time consuming task than I had anticipated. Needless to say that it was more expensive as well. But from now on I can listen to my tapes, half of them I hadn't heard yet, having bought them in various sales in Sydney.

* Hotmail threathening me again, it's going to destroy some of my email. How ever much I do enjoy attachments and pictures, if you do have any, please mail them to gerbie7@yahoo.com , as that mailbox has got a few more MB's than the one mister Hotmail has given me. Especially as I am due to leave Adelaide, which means that I won't be able to check my mail as regularly, apart from that it'll cost heaps.

* The very first meal I prepared for myself on my brand new stove, in my new wok, disappeared on the floor for at least two thirds, as I found out the hard way that the handle of the wok wasn't very stable.

Until number 34,

Gerben
