It is difficult to describe the cartoons by Peter van Straaten. At first sight there is nothing happening, just some people in a normal everyday situation. The line that accompanies the drawing seems boring as well. But there is always an underlying issue. Most of the time irony tells the real story, sometimes it's plain suffering. But never ever is anybody happy in his cartoons. One page can tell a whole story. This book my father got on his birthday, I think I read it before him. I've got several books by him myself, even one translated into English, 'This literary life'. If you bump into it somewhere, don't hesitate. You'll like it, but you'd probably need to read it twice to get everything, to get used to the way he thinks. I like him.

uploaded a new picture. I have grown a bit older than on the previous one. See if I can use it.
