Isabel Allende e.a. – Brieven voor Paula (03-038)

Allende wrote an amazing novel about her daughter Paula, while she was in a coma. She told her daughter the history of her family, hoping that her daughter someday would read it. Later she realised that her daughter could not be saved. In 1992 Paula died. The novel a few years later had a huge impact. People from all over the world felt the need to write to Allende. This book is a collection of those letters, with an introduction by her self. Only for those who have read the book, though I´m sure should you read this one first, that you will read the book itself immediately.

Paul Theroux - The mosquito coast (03-039)

It had been a while since I read a book by Theroux. I love his travel books. He has been called a cynic by many, though I guess that could be seen as a recommendation as well. To me it isn´t necessarily a negative point. Theroux writes big books, which makes them ideal to take on a holiday, at least to me, as I read a lot and can´t take piles of books.

The Mosquito coast is a novel, yet it is also a travel book. An American family decides to leave the States, the country is not making progress according to Father. They end up in Honduras where they manage to create a little community where they live happily, all doing their daily chores. Father even manages to build an ice machine, use fire to make ice, even in the heat of central America. Yet father goes berserk and things do not look as brightly as they did before.

Great story, difficult to put down. It does help that I have been in Honduras and have some images in my head when I read this. Apart from that I saw a great movie with Robin Williams as the brilliant, yet crazy father. Greatly recommended.

Dan Turell – Moord in het paradijs (03-040)

A detective was just what the doctor ordered on a Montezuma themed afternoon in Camaguey, Cuba. I had read one book by Turell ages ago, though not this one. I actually enjoyed it. It has all the characteristics of a typical whodunnit, a nice one at it though. Turell has a good sense of humour, small remarks in the book that do not necessarily tell something about the story, make the book fun reading.

The story, in some provincial town in the middle of Denmark is about the murder of a prostitute, where a suspect was caught within minutes. Yet a journalist, a lawyer and a police detective from the capital do not believe that the boy, a few sandwiches short for a picnic, is actually a killer.
