Campert is an author who has been publishing a lot for decades now. One could easily fill several shelves with his novels, his collected short stories, his poetry and his colleted columns. I think his strongest works are his short stories and columns, though as a performer reading his own work, he hardly knows an equal.

This book is a short novel, which probably has some autobiographic background, though his style isn’t suitable for just some facts from the past. An old author goes to Paris to celebrate that one of his novels has been translated and published there. For the occasion he will meet an old friend of his, an artist he once spent a year in that very city with, hoping to make it big. His friend eventually did, he had to go back to the Netherlands.

During his short stay the author has all kinds of flashbacks, also brought back through a coincidental meeting with a woman who recognises him, yet he fails to recognize her. We, readers, get an interesting insight in the mind and life of the author.

Nice style, as always, yet an end that was a bit disappointing to my liking.
