I had never heard of Carlos Gardel, until I arrived in Buenos Aires last year. Over there two cemetaries are worth visiting. Apart from Recoleta, with the grave of Evita, Chacarita is less known. Her husband, Juan Peron is there. But this grave is much more interesting. Gardel was the greatest Tango singer of all times. His grave not only has a statue of him, but is literally covered in commemorance plaques. Every politician, musical group, fanclub and their neighbours have their names on his grave. But the best thing was his number one fan, left in the picture. I imagine him leaving his home early every morning to go to the cemetary, where he tells tourists about the great singer. Leaflets in several languages are in his plastic bag. As are spare batteries for his transistor radio, that plays music from the popular singer. If in Buenos Aires, visit the grave.
