When travelling somewhere I try to find some appropriate literature while travelling. So for this summer’s trip to Jamaica, I took VS Naipaul. A nobel prize winner from Trinidad, Naipaul is considered the Caribics best author.

This book is a tale of his return in 1960 from the UK. Apart from taking the boat over the ocean to his native Trinidad, Naipaul continues his journey to British Guyana, Suriname, Martinique and Jamaica.

Naipaul manages to throw in a lot of history, politics and sociology, his notes on the countries are therefore more than just the things he sees and the people he meets, like many other travel authors. I did like reading this book, but found it hard going at times, when he expanded on subjects that could have been left behind after one paragraph. Perhaps I shouldn’t have read it while travelling, one tends to want something lighter on the road.
