Life is a lottery

Emir Kusturica made a movie about the best football player of all times. The movie Maradona was released earlier this year. During the movie we see a clip with Manu Chao. The French singer wrote a great song about the superstar. The official video contains images from the documentary. The singer also played the song at Jools Holland live in Later. While he was still in the band Mano Negra he had written a song about his admiration for the Argentine football star. The song Santa Maradona was a tiny cult hit.

The song La Vida Tombola can be found on his latest album La Radiolina. It inspired many amateur to built a clip with great football moments combined with Chao's music.

But it all remains in the shadow compared to the clip from the documentary. Kusturica flew Chao to Buenos Aires and put him on a street corner with his guitar. Chao obliges and plays the song, just as the football player arrives. I would have murdered to have been there. Two heroes in one street, just like that, in the wild. Maradona, unshaven and rough as ever stays on the street and listens. And I am the only one noticing that, behind the dark sunglasses, Maradona is touched? I don't think there is a discussion about that.

The first line of the song is repeated quite a few times. It says a lot: "Si yo fuera Maradona, viviria como el"."If I were Maradona, I'd live exactly like he does". Beautiful dedication, certainly given the fact that nobody argues about the football skills of Maradona, but about his lifestyle the opinions seem to differ a bit more.

Life is a lottery, great title for a song. Perhaps even a nice motto for life. At very least a nice way to start 2009.
