I do agree on the point where you state that most countries will show exactly that what they are good at. I think you picked a bad example to prove your point. Fish is not big in the states, nor is tennis, so I don't think many Americans will have watched.
I was annoyed with a lot of the television presentors making (sexist or silly) jokes about several sports and with the fact that they cut broadcast several times in the middle of an event or race. Even the highlights in the evening avoided most of what really happened in Athens. In comparison with Argentine tv (only two golds for them as well), Chilean tv and media were incredibly single minded.
