Wednesday we left Manaus on the boat for our 4 day trip to Belem. Something like 1700 kilometer to get from the jungle to the coast. The boat is fairly slow and will take over 4 days to get there. Nevermind, time to relax and do nothing, something the first 2 and a half weeks was rarely done. The boat has 3 decks. The bottom deck is the cheapest, you put your hammock out with dozens of others and survive the next days. The middle deck is a bit more expensive. Also crowded with hammocks, but not as near to the engines, hence less hot. Apart from that, food is included for them.
Then there are a few cabins. We rented one of them. A bunkbed and just enough space to stand next to it, with a tiny bathroom where you can use the toilet and take a shower at the same time. And a few extra to share it with, though after throwing out half a dozen cockroaches, there is only one beatle bugging is still, so we are okay.
On the third deck is where we spend most of time. Sit and read, then hang and read. We have decided to splash out on a hammock as well, just before we left and now take turns to hang in the hammock. Apart from reading, staring at the shore is a good way to pass some time as well. Yolanda seems to have made a habit of falling asleep after reading 3 pages, I´m amazed one person can sleep so many hours during a day and still sleep at night. I admit taking a siesta myself as well, so I´m not one to critisize.
We´re halfway now, in Senterem, where we can spend the day, before this afternoon the boat continues it journey. We´ll probably fight over who gets the hammock first, but I´m sure we´ll manage. Buying an extra one for one day seems exaggerated and carrying two extra hammocks is impossible with the backpacks filled to the edge already.
Quiet days, but certainly nice days as well.
