Port au Prince. Haiti. The poorest country I have ever visited. No infrastructure. No jobs. No money. No fun in life. Downtown Port au Prince seems like one huge marketplace. I see people selling toothbrushes on the street. Walking around, the most photogenetic are the local buses. Taptaps. Every single one of them has some orangy basic colour, though most of it can't be seen, because of the paintings on the back. Busdrivers all are either part time painters or know somebody who is. It is fascinating to see all those unique paintings. Quite often from someone they adore. Michael Jordan, Zinedine Zidane, Bob Marley, Kobe Bryant, Barry Bonds. Obviously Jesus is popular as well. Religion fares well in poverty. In Haiti Catholisism is mixed with Voodoo. Why the driver of this Taptap has named his minibus Boeing 747 is unknown to me. Perhaps the closest thing to Jesus he could think of?
