The problem with holding politicians accountable is the old line of 'who do you sue?'. America changes leaders every 4-8 years. With the strict separation of government powers between the legislative, judicial, and administrative, you can't properly blame a president for not paying UN dues if his congress refuses to appropriate the money. Very often is the case of a minority party holding the reins of power. And a president is only as good as his cabinet advisors. Henry Kissinger was able to fool Nixon (by playing to his devious side) into many of the late Vietnam era atrocities like the bombing of Cambodia. It's very hard to blame America's foreign policies because frankly they don't really have one anymore - at least till now.
As for the Isreali/Palistine mess one of the worst things America could do is actually go and force a settlement to the issue. If for example the Palistinians were to get their homeland on good terms and the US became a major partner with them Osama would be infuriated that a holy Muslim nation would be 'infected' by the 'Yankee Devil'. This guy is just plain evil. Appeasing him would just get him madder. At any rate no one should have to chose friends whilst looking down the barrel of a gun.
Out of six million rounded up by Nazis perhaps 50.000 survived. By all laws of statistics I shouldn't be here - but then I never really studied law. ;o)
You might be interested to know that the Dutch settlers of Nieuw Amsterdam used to make fun of their English neighbours by calling them 'John Cheese' (referring to the English charicature 'John Bull'). It didn't seem to bother the British much as they were soon calling themselves 'Yankees'...
