Yesterday for the first time in a month I went to school by bike. I really enjoyed it, it's been too long. I can't explain why I enjoy doing so. It's an extra effort, I cycle about 18 km (12 miles US, 11 miles UK) to get there, it takes just over an hour to do so, mainly because of all the traffic lights the last few km. I normally don't enjoy extra effort. I have to get up earlier to get to work by bike. At least 20 minutes, I take half an hour. The evening (more night like, he says in a geordie accent) person I am, does not enjoy the alarm clock in the morning. The route isn't particulary nice, most of it is just next to the main road, with noise so loud I can hardly hear my walkman. I hate the traffic lights where people with their lazy arses in their cars always get preference and I have to wait for a couple of minutes. I enjoy the train ride to work, it gives me time to doze, contemplate or read a book. I don't get that when cycling.

But still I love cycling to work. The hour in the morning to wake me up gets me through the day, the hour in the afternoon gives me time to reflect, to have a bit of tranquility after a day's nagging by annoying kids. The chance to play that one tape I haven't played for ages on my walkman, singing along shamelessly, knowing that nobody can hear me. The idea that I am actually doing an effort, without it becoming a burden. The idea that I can do something about not fattening, without excersising.

This morning I was ready to leave when I realised it rained. I took the train again. I hate the weather this way. One month work, one day weather nice enough to go by bike.
