In the yard of the museum at the Hector Pieterson memorial every brick represents a student. A student killed during the Student uprising in 1976. They wanted education in their own language, unfortunately during the Apartheid regime not an option.

Two of the bricks near my feet draw my special attention. Two students died on my birthday. I turned seven that day, but thousands of kilometers away Dilikile Xekeshe and Mlulalemi Guwa were killed by the police. The fact remained in my head for quite a while.

Ik vind dit soort 'gebeurtenis' postings van je vaak zo bijzonder omdat ik ook associaties / herinneringen heb aan de dingen waar je over schrijft.

In dit geval is dat voor mij mijn enorme bewondering voor Steve Biko en daarvan afgeleid de film Cry Freedom (IMDB). En in specifiek de scene in de film die zich afspeelt tijdens de uprising, waarin wordt getoond hoe het leger het vuur opent op die lopende kinderen. Mijn maag keert zich al om als ik er alleen al aan denk. Ik weet het niet zeker maar volgens mij was Cry Freedom toentertijd echt de eye-opener voor mij voor wat betreft Zuid Afrika / apartheid en ben ik me er sindsdien alleen maar meer in gaan verdiepen.

Dank je. Leuk te zien dat het mensen raakt. Al is dat met dit onderwerp ook erg voordehandliggend. Ik kan met herinneren dat ik het boek van Donald Woods las, waarop de film is gebaseerd.

We hebben deze zomer ook bewust een omweggetje gereden om het graf van Biko te bezoeken. De foto daarvan was echter iets minder sprekend dan deze. Die studentenopstand is echt bij me gaan leven door daar rond te lopen in Soweto.

It does happen a lot that in the first year's of one's existence, one tends to miss out a lot of the news in the world. :-)

Luckily people have recorded things like this and we can read about it.
