In South Africa traveling is easy for Dutch people. Afrikaans is a language with the same origin. So most of the time, without actually speaking the language, one can understand. Just sometimes the words have gone different ways. So while the first word still means the same in Dutch (information), the second one these days has a completely different meaning. It rhymes with 'rank'...

Couldn't stop a giggle and had to shoot a picture obviously!

I can sometimes halfway understand Dutch. There seems to be (and feel free to correct me on this) a lot of English, Scandinavian and German words in Dutch. I'm fluent in Danish (duh!) and English and I learned German in school (but I never use it anymore, so the fluency is gone), so sometimes Dutch makes sense. At least in text.

The languages you mention are all related, hence it is logical you recognize a lot.

In school, years ago now, we once got a list of Swedish words. We had twenty minutes to study them. After that we got a newspaper clipping and had to answer questions. It worked really well. If you recognize three out of the five most important words in a sentence, you can stil understand what the sentence is about.
