Dan Turell – Moord in het donker (05-047)

Ik heb al meerdere boeken gelezen van Turell, een Deense schrijver van misdaadromans. In elk deel werken een journalist en een politie-inspecteur samen. Zo ook in dit verhaal. Ik heb er een tijdje naar moeten zoeken, volgens mij is dit het eerste deel, via Internet tweedehands aangeschaft. Op de een of andere manier spreekt de naamloze hoofdfiguur me aan. Hij is een levensgenieter, een cynicus, maar ook een eigenzinnig figuur die tegen allerlei problemen aanloopt.

Dit moet het eerste boek zijn, want onze held kent zijn toekomstige vriend Ehlers, de politieman nog niet. Het verhaal begint met een telefoontje midden in de nacht, van een man die hem vraagt naar een bepaald adres te komen. Hij gaat niet en hoort de volgende ochtend dat de man is vermoord. Hij kende hem niet, maar hoe kende de man hem? Ongewild is hij dus een moordzaak ingesleurd. Een paar dagen later weer een moord, in hetzelfde huizenblok.

Al snel vermoeden de onderzoekers dat het iets met drugs te maken moet hebben. Uiteindelijk is er een verrassend eind: er kan niet met zekerheid gezegd worden wie de dader of daders was. Geweldig, tenslotte horen verhalen als dit altijd opgelost te worden, anders ‘klopt’ het boek niet.

Turell heeft prachtige boeken geschreven, dit is de eerste in een serie. Ik zou haast Deens willen lezen, om de rest ook te kunnen lezen. Volgens mij zijn er maar 4 vertaald naar het Nederlands, ik hou me aanbevolen mochten er meer zijn. Engels zou ook geweldig zijn, Duits, als het maar leesbaar is.

Boris Akunin – The Winter queen (05-046)

Akunin apparently is a major best-seller in Russia at the moment. This book is the first in a series of mysteries, starring Erast Fandorin. Crime stories based in the late 19th century, probably not coincidentally the time when the major Russian authors published several classics.

A suicide seems exactly that to most bystanders and the police as well. Not to our hero, who tries to find out what happened before the suicide. He travels to London and St. Petersburg, bumps into a global conspiracy and solves the mystery, though a lot happens before he is that far.

I loved reading several Russian authors, but I am afraid that Akunin will not be in my list of writers I will follow in the future. The book never really had me on the edge of my seat, never managed to drag me into it.

Uderzo/Goscinny – Asterix nos jogos olimpicos (05-045)

After visiting Brasil this summer and managing to read a Garfield in Portuguese, I remembered I had an Asterix in that language as well. Now was the best time to read it, after all I have been exposed to the language for a month, I wouldn’t know if that situation ever appears again, certainly not soon.

So I decided to read another book from my extensive (26 languages and dialects) collection. Obviously I have read every single episode before, but reading it in a language I don’t speak is funny anyway. At points it was too difficult, but a comic is usually easy enough, even if one cannot read all the words.

Harry Enfield – And his humorous chums (05-043)

After the successful television series, there is always the t-shirt, the video, the mug and the book. That last one was on sale in the Netherlands. Strange as we never saw the series here, so for almost everyone in my little country, Enfield is a complete unknown.

The first times I saw Enfield, I have to admit, I didn’t like it either. Bit after repeatedly being shown the same video (several school groups took the video to Austria in the winters I worked there), I started to understand most and even like some of the characters.

In this book he explains the background of his popular characters, one can read some of the sketches and several pictures liven it up a bit. His sidekicks Paul Whitehouse and Kathy Burke obviously are in the book as well. Together with Wayne and Waynetta, Tim nice but dim, the Dutch coppers, Julio Geordio, Kevin and Michael Paine.

Nice, if you’ve seen the series. For fans therefore. I think I am one.

Hard Gras 41 – Cult-voetballers (05-042)

Wat is een cult-voetballer? Erg moeilijk te definiëren. Hard Gras doet een poging, maar eigenlijk ook weer niet. Dick Nanninga en Chris Gyan hebben weinig overeenkomsten. Martin Drent en Theo Lucius ook niet. Toch vallen ze allemaal in de categorie. Verhalen over cult-voetballers zijn ook interessant. Mijn favoriete cult-voetballer krijgt een mooi gedicht van Huisdichter Cornelis. Het doet La Ling wel recht. Een verhaal zou ook niet bij zijn manier van voetballen gepast hebben. Het verhaal van Simon Kuper over Malcolm McLaren lijkt niet echt in dit boek te passen, maar vreemd genoeg weet de producer wel genoeg van voetbal om er een leuk verhaal van te maken. Ook mijn favoriete Feyenoorder (voor een Ajax-fan erg moeilijk om uit te spreken) Joseph Kiprich wordt geportretteerd.

Deel 41 al weer, goed onderwerp voor een Hard Gras special.

Jim Davis – Garfield Segunda-Feira (05-041)

Whenever I am in a new country, I try to find a Garfield pocket. Nice for my collection, but also good for my language skills. When I was in Brazil, unfortunately I couldn’t find a pocket, but I found a full colour compilation book.

I have to admit that I don’t speak Portuguese, hearing it in Brazil didn’t change that either. Yet written the language is so close to Spanish and Italian, that it is not difficult to understand it. This compilation (114 tiras coloridas it says on the cover) aims at Monday. As real Garfield fans know he is not a big fan of Mondays. This book has picked the cat throughout his careers and his Monday troubles.

Michael Moore – Will they ever trust us again? (05-040)

This book wasn’t difficult. Moore has become a public figure, though he needed an Oscar speech to become the household name he is nowadays. Everyone seems to have an opinion about him and his work, yet few really know him or his work.

This book is a direct result of his fame. Everyone who disagrees with the president (quite a few at the moment) feels that through Moore their discontentment can easily be released. When soldiers started writing to Moore from Afghanistan and Iraq, the concept was clear. People need to know about this, so compile the letters and call it a book.

The book consists of four different parts. First soldiers writing about what is wrong with the war. Secondly more soldiers, just not those in Iraq but elsewhere on the planet. Then letters from veterans from former wars and finally the ones close to the soldiers give us their opinions.

I’m afraid the book wasn’t everything I expected. Okay, so I got confirmation of the fact that most soldiers do not support the case they are fighting for. Apart from that it seems that the impression that not even the US army has any idea why they are in Iraq is correct.

I was already halfway into the book, when I finally read the first letter that actually touched me. “Death in Iraq has a face” by Margaret Reimer. The subject says a lot: “President Bush killed my student today”. She tells Moore about her former student who went to Iraq. His wife is still a student of her. Very touchingly she describes how she got to know the couple and how much his death affects her life. Only a few more letters like this have made it into the final edit of this book.

Interesting book. As often before, I am still wondering why some people seem to think that violence can be a solution for problems.

Noam Chomsky – Doctrines and visions (05-039)

While Michael Moore seems to have found one major cause of all problems in the USA, the evil president, Chomsky seems to make a more objective analysis. Based on proper research, with clear statements, Chomsky is able to explain a lot of the problems, not just in the USA, but also world wide.

Israel, Turkey and Iraq play important roles in the world. Mistakes in Nicaragua and Haiti get an explanation. Wolfowitz is not a very popular man anymore, after reading this. A picture on the front page of Rumsfeld during his meeting with Saddam Hussein says a lot.

Little booklet, published as an introduction and afterword to Chomsky’s Hegemony or Survival, published especially for Penguin’s 70th anniversary as a publisher. Very interesting.

Mario Vargas Llosa – De stad en de honden (05-038)

His most translated book apparently, I can imagine why. Very interesting story, for someone who seems as pacifistic as Vargas Llosa, he is able to tell the story of a military school as if he has been to one himself.

A new group of recruits starts their school and become a tight group. Several of them stick together, in their battle against other cohorts. Two of them stand out. The Slave and the Poet have different roles. One day the Slave, not nicknamed like that for nothing, dies during an exercise. Everybody is convinced it was an accident, though his only friend, the Poet, disagrees. He tries to find out the truth.

The story gets told from the first-person perspective, though it is not always clear who that person is. This makes reading complicated, yet very interesting. The change of perspective is accompanied by a change in time and a change of place. All these changes keep the book interesting until the very last chapter, before that some gaps still need to be filled.

One of his masterpieces, Vargas Llosa certainly deserves more attention if it comes to naming Latin American authors.

Iain Banks – Espedair street (05-037)

Daniel Weir used to be a famous rock star. Now he is only in his early thirties and knows he never has to work another day in his life. But what do you do if you’re financially successful; though don’t know how to live properly.

In between the daily events in his life, we get to find out how he became the man he is nowadays. From a shy boy who wrote songs to the biggest band in the history of rock. His past and his future can’t be seen as separate entities.

Banks is one of my favourite authors. Not every single book he writes is as good, but to me, that only shows he is human as well. He shows an incredible insight into the rock business, he seems to be able to write autobiographical stories for dozens of people. I enjoy his books a lot, need to complete my back catalogue. This one, though old, is certainly a recommender.

Derek Hansen – Lunch with the generals (05-036)

In Leichhart, Sydney, in an Italian restaurant, every week four men gather. They tell each other stories. In the meantime they enjoy the delicious food. They hardly know each other, apart from their love for fine cuisine and good stories.

Then one of them, a blind former Argentinean, starts a story that last 6 weeks. It might have an autobiographical content, as a refugee from Buenos Aires plays a lead role in this story. The other main character is a half Dutch, half English girl, born in Indonesia. Fate has them bump into each other in Sydney.

The story fills the other three with doubts about their friend, but in the mean time they do enjoy the history.

Great book, much better than I had anticipated.

Redmond O’Hanlon – Tussen Orinoco en Amazone (05-035)

Travel literature while travelling can be nice, though it can also be bad for your own perception. Yet I knew enough about O’Hanlon that my visit wouldn’t even resemble his tracking off the Amazon, so I read it anyway.

Thinking back I have only read some short stories by him, even though I knew he is one of the greatest travel authors of all time. This book was a great introduction to his work.

O’Hanlon sets off for a four month journey to the heart of the Amazon jungle. In Venezuela he visits on old friend and hires a bunch of local staff to go and find a mountain hardly ever visited and visit a tribe of indigenous Indians, the Yanomami.

With his great sense of, very British, humour, one cannot help admiring O’Hanlon as the overweight eccentric that goes to places that not even hero locals want to go to.

It was a great book, sometimes laugh out loud funny, it prepared me well before going into the jungle myself. Two days was good enough for me, I certainly wouldn’t manage four months. Nor did Simon, his travel companion, by the way.

I will certainly continue reading his books.

John D. MacDonald – The lonely silver rain (05-034)

The first book I read during my summer holiday, started it in the airplane, finished it a day later. Another book in the ‘colour’-series with hero Travis McGee. Trav needs to find a stolen boat, as a house boat owner he uses his contacts and soon finds the boat. Next to that he finds some corpses and plenty of fake money. Drugs must be involved. After this discovery he becomes a target himself, not what he was hoping for.

Good holiday reading.

Wilfried de Jong – De linkerbil van Bettini (05-033)

Columns en korte verhalen van een van mijn favoriete journalisten. Na een prachtige carrière in het theater samen met Martin van Waardenberg, besloot Wilfried de Jong het op de televisie te proberen. In Sportpaleis de Jong maakte hij geweldige filmpjes over allerlei sportlieden. Zelfs de meest oninteressante sporten leverden nog mooie interviews op. Echte, niet gespeelde, interesse bleek een goede formule te zijn. Later mocht hij het proberen op de late avond, Pakhuis de Jong, net zo goed, maar niet het kijkcijferkanon dat tegenwoordig op de televisie vereist is. Zijn sportpaleis ging op in Holland Sport, het veelgeprezen programma dat hij samen met Matthijs van Nieuwkerk maakt.

In dit boek een aantal fictieve verhalen, andere verhalen zijn achtergronden bij stukjes die we op televisie al gezien konden hebben. Vooral het bezoek aan de oude Campionissimo Gino Bartali was prachtig. Het verhaal over diens zolderkamertje is dat ook. De Jong schrijft zoals hij interviewt, met gevoel. Met passie voor de sport. Dat hij als Rotterdammer gefascineerd is door boksen vergeven we hem, tenslotte schrijft hij ook over stadgenoot Faas Wilkes.

Prachtig boek, geweldig schrijver. Mooie voorkant. Intrigerende titel.

Gerard Reve – De avonden (05-032)

Werken in het onderwijs heeft in ieder geval als voordeel dat je elk jaar boeken relatief goedkoop kunt kopen via Wolters-Noordhoff. Bulkboeken bestaan niet meer, maar de zogenaamde ‘lijsters’ zijn altijd ook goed. Sinds een paar jaar ook zogenaamde Kroonlijsters, klassiekers uit de Nederlandse literatuur. Mooi voor in de kast, maar wie leest ze ook daadwerkelijk?

De Avonden was dus de eerste klassieker die eindelijk maar eens gelezen moest worden. Volgens velen een van de hoogtepunten uit de Nederlandse naoorlogse literatuur. Helaas heb ik dat er niet uitgehaald. Het boek blinkt uit in zwarte humor, volgens de overlevering, maar meer dan een flauwe glimlach haalde het bij mij niet naar boven.

De naam Frits van Egters is ondertussen synoniem met de wederopbouw, de donkere jaren vijftig. Het boek speelt vlak na de oorlog en Frits woont nog thuis en zoekt elke dag weer naar manieren om de avonden door te komen. Tien dagen lang volgen we zijn leven, lezen we zijn gedachten. Aan het eind is het jaar voorbij en weten we iets meer over hem.

Een tijdsbeeld, heb ik gehoord. Het beste boek ooit geschreven in het Nederlands, las ik ergens. Het zal dus allemaal wel aan mij liggen. Ik vond het niet bijzonder, het trucje dat Frits soms iets zegt dat iedereen doet opkijken is na 3 keer uitgemolken. Helaas heb ik er te weinig van begrepen, maar ik heb nu tenminste wel een klassieker gelezen.

Ed McBain – Kiss (05-031)

The new 87th precinct novel it says on the cover. I started reading it in the week McBain died. There won’t be any new ones any more. But he has written heaps of books starring Steve Carella already, so I’m sure I’ll bump into a few in the future before I have read them all.

In this book someone wants to kill a lady. After two failed murder attempts, the police get very suspicious about her bodyguard. But who is behind the story?

As always McBain writes a great Whodunnit, with plenty of eye for detail and shows the human side of the cops as well. In this case, Carella, who also has to work during the time his father’s killer is on trial. The story lines mingle nicely and make it an interesting read.

Geert Mak – Gedoemd tot kwetsbaarheid (05-030)

Ik had nog nooit iets van Mak gelezen, heb de hype dus gemist. Dit kleine boekje, meer een pamflet, manifest, essay, hoe je het ook wil noemen, is dus mijn eerste kennismaking met Mak. Hij schreef het boekje in de dagen na de moord op Theo van Gogh. Hij probeert te analyseren wat er met het land gebeurde na de ‘tweede’ politieke moord (Fortuyn was dan de eerste).

Wat goed is, is dat hij zijn uitgebreide historische kennis gebruikt om parallellen te vinden. Mede daardoor gaat hij niet mee in de waan van de dag, zoals vele populistische politici helaas niet hebben kunnen vermijden te doen. Aan de andere kant blijft het een verhaal van hem, zijn inzicht, zijn mening. Velen vielen hem aan op die mening. Opiniepagina’s van kranten, serieuze weekbladen, men vroeg zich af of Mak wel wist wat hij geschreven had.Vooral de 50 vragen die Carel Brendel in het AD stelde, maken dit boekje met de grond gelijk. Maar terwijl hij enkele zeer terechte vragen stelt, staan daar ook weer precies de fouten tussen die Mak verweten worden. Laat ik maar eens meedoen in die trant: Sinds wanneer heeft het AD een mening, waarom zou men dus nu ineens wel kritisch mogen kijken naar een boek?

Hoe dan ook is dit boekje precies wat er van verwacht mocht worden. Een aanleiding voor discussie, even nadenken over de staat van het land, zonder eerst te roepen en dan pas te controleren of het klopte. Voor menig politicus een aanbeveling.

Mart Smeets – De Tour van ’80 (05-029)

Zittend op een berg in de Pyreneeën, wachtend op de renners van de Tour, is er maar een boek dat je hoort te lezen: het boek dat Smeets schreef over de Tour. Dit jaar staat geheel in het teken van de Tour van ’80, op radio en televisie, ook via dit boek dus. De Tour die Joop Zoetemelk won. Toevalligerwijze ook het jaar waarin ik voor het eerst een Touretappe zag.

Smeets gebruikt al zijn contacten en komt met behulp van de archieven van de NOS en de Franse sportkrant L’Equipe en vele interviews met betrokkenen, tot een reconstructie van de tweede Nederlandse Tourwinst in de geschiedenis.

Sober beschreven, maar tegelijkertijd wel grondig, bijna alle renners hebben hem geholpen, een paar kleine primeurs tussendoor, leuk boek, erg interessant.

Michael Palin – Reis om de wereld in 80 dagen (05-028)

I prefer not to read translations, but this time I fell for the mid-price edition, as the imported edition usually is overprized. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to read this book, as I considered it a spin-off from the similar television series, hence close to merchandise, not something I spent my money on.

But Palin can write, I loved his novel “Hemingway’s chair” so I decided to take the gamble. I was not disappointed. Obviously the book is written as a diary, while he is travelling for the first of many TV-series. The great thing about the book is that it gives a view behind the scenes of what everybody saw on television. You get to know how many takes were necessary for certain ‘unique’ experiences and how boring life on the road can be. The reader can relive the journey, based on the famous Verne novel; imagine what it is like to travel around the world.

On the other hand, the book isn’t that brilliant, it obviously has plenty of laughs, the comedian in Palin will never disappear, but his observations aren’t that deep, the fact that he has a team of producers arranging every step ahead of him, makes it feel like cheating, even though you know that it is inevitable in this world of television, where every second counts.

Nice book, not a top travel book though. Better watch the series on TV or DVD.
