Herman Brusselmans – Het einde van mensen in 1967 (03-011)

Short stories. But it could be a novel as well. Every single story has a different main character. But the same characters also appear as extra’s in other stories. Things that seem extremely odd in one story, are completely logical after you’ve read another story half a book away. Brusselmans again managed to write a book that could be considered a classic. He writes so many books, not every single one can be a classic. His publisher has to stop him, as he could easily produce two novels a year. I’ve got over half of the books he wrote since his debut in 1982. I am a fan and confirm his self proclaimed status of young god of Flemish literature. At the moment he is the number one author in the Dutch language.

His stories about typical local characters that every one seems to recognise always end up in tragic tales with weirdo’s and absurd conversations. The three pubs on the town square. Lawyers taking an injured man to the doctor on their way to a brothel, then forget the man who dies in their trunk. The lesbian nun who falls in love with the neighbours daughter, every single character is brilliant. You just gotta love Brusselmans.
