Rendell writes a lot, not only under her own name, but also as Barbara Vine. Some of her thrillers are great, her series with Inspector Wexford are entertaining. I have read quite a few by her, though there are still a few on my shelves that haven't been touched. This one is a psychological thriller, about an accountant who won thousands in the football pools. His friend, who had helped him with the results, is never told. He is not selfish though, but starts a scheme in which he is helping a lot of, what he considers, poor people in his direct surroundings. Unfortunately everything is not as easy as it seems. Giving away money is more complicated then you expect. It causes a lot of waves in the quiet village. This book will never be high on my list. It was passing time, but never reaches the levels she has proven she can reach. It was a bit disappointing, even a bit predictable, which is always bad in a thriller. For fans only I guess.

Aug. 29th, 2001 04:18 pmHi LJ-Friends,
This newsletter went to all the people who have been reading my 40 travel stories in the past year and a half. I know several of you have been on my friends-list for quite a while already. So when I ask my friends to mail me the answers below here, the same question goes out to you. Put them in the comments section, or if you don't want just anybody to read it, mail them to me. It would be well appreciated.
Gerbie on tour 43
Hello everybody. Home for a month now, I am busy with getting my pictures on a website, so you can see where I have been, after having read about it. In the meantime I am trying to get up to date again. I have visited some friends, mailed a bit with a few others, but realised that I'm still not up to scratch. I have missed a lot during my journey. The main news stories came to me, I have read local newspapers whenever I could. Other things were mailed to me, but there is still plenty missing. Traveling is a selfish trade. I was living for my journey, there wasn't much more at that moment. Now that I am back here again, I'd like to know everything I have missed. So I thought it might be a good idea to ask everybody a few questions. Unfortunately it would be impossible to write different mails to 160 people, so I am asking a few general questions. Please mail me with your answers. I am curious, I want to know everything. Some of you have been mailing me on a regular basis, then again from some of you I haven't got a clue what has happened since November 1999. This is not about Gerbie, like nearly all these newsletters have been, this is about you. So if I could ask a bit of your time, please answer the following questions.
1. What is the most important thing that happened in the world during my journey (Basically since the beginning of this millenium)?
2. What is the most important thing that happened in your country in the same period?
3. What happened in your life in the last year and a half?
4. Tell me about your last (or next) journey/travels/vacation/holiday?
5. Who will you be voting for in the next election?
Just five questions, you can answer as short or long as you'd like. 5 short answers are welcome, if you want to turn them into five short essays do feel free. If someone else has read my newsletters as well, even though they are not on my mailing list, ask them as well. I'd love to see everybody's answers the coming weeks.
In the meantime I'll finish the new website and will let you all know where you can see my pictures and read my stories on the web. Thanx for reading Gerbie on tour!
