I am proud to announce that I have used the extra day off to do the dishes (finally), to hoover the whole house, to do some running, sort out the pile of holiday brochures and also do the laundry.

Jabber is an opensource, XML based protocol used primarily for instant messaging. It supports all the goodies you've come to expect from IM, such as file transfer, etc, etc. You can read a bit more about it over here (http://www.jabber.org/about/overview.php?PHPSESSID=5655e990703749b08a951737e0ff4270).
To make use of it, you first need a Jabber client (http://www.jabber.org/user/clientlist.php). Click the link for a small list. I've used Exodus, and Psi, and can recommend both. Once you have a client, creating an account is as simple as picking a server, and a login name. myname@myserver.net. Almost all countries have large, well-connected servers you can make use of. Jabber.org, Jabber.us, Jabber.dk, etc. This forms the username you give to your friends.
If you'd like to start using jabber, you can also get rid of your old message clients! All of the big servers offer what are called "transports", to let you connect to older networks like AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, MSMSN, et al. through your jabber client!
If you are interesting in trying out jabber, or have questions, let me know and I can try to help. If you get it setup and want to talk with someone, feel free to add Quintin@jabber.dk. :)
Thanx for your friendly help. Yet I feel that having used IM via MSN only once a month for a while, Yahoo not since summer 2002, it might not be worth the hassle.
