Looking at clips from Live 8, all of them .mov If I play them in Real Player or even with the downloaded Quick Time, I do not get any sound. What did I do wrong?
It sounds like you're missing some 'codecs'. Codecs help to decompress media files, so that they can be played. Sometimes the media players you have installed don't have the required codecs to decompress sound and images properly. So to play some files (.mov files are definitely Apple Quicktime files) you need to download some more codecs.
There are free applications available that will tell you what codecs you need to play any particular file. A popular one is GSpot, http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm (click Download link). Instead of using something like GSpot, you could just download a recent codec pack, which, if it's good, will hopefully include the codecs you need to play the file. Here are some recent codec packs: http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Packs.htm Download and run them.
The trouble with codecs is that they can conflict with each other. Solving one problem by downloading a codec pack may cause another problem with the playback of other files. If you use GSpot, it will help you to find individual codecs, so that you don't need to download whole packs of them. This is good, because it reduces the chances of getting conflicting codecs.

Download codec packs at your own risk...!
