Random thoughts

Pictures about Bush or Mr.Bean as Bin Laden, pictures of new skylines of Manhattan, new ways to construct new twin towers. You must have seen them. In your email or here on LJ. They are not really funny are they? Why do people forward them then?

Watching CNN Sunday night I saw a green screen next to whoever was talking at the time. Supposingly these were images from Afghanistan by night. All I could see were some lights once in a while. Nothing else. To me it resembled most an old-fashioned computer screen, from the days of the five and a quarter inch floppy disk. Was somebody playing a Commodore 64 in Atlanta, trying to fool us?

Does nobody realise that even if you do kill/catch Bin Laden, the battle is nowhere near over? According to the CIA his organisation stretches out over 60 countries, by just grabbing the big leader, the terrorists will be more determined to continue their battle. They only see these actions as confirmation of what they already knew: America is the big aggressor. A new leader will arise, nothing really changes.

If Afghanistan is bombed empty, will America start destroying other places that are tied to Bin Laden? Switzerland, where he undoubtedly has plenty of his money. Saudi Arabia, because of his nationality. Florida, as several of the hijackers learned how to fly over there. Pakistan, because it's conveniently close to Afghanistan. Who's next?

Did anybody read 1984? See any similarities? (Thanx Jacob Levich for pointing them clearly)

Some people painted racist remarks on a Syrian Orthodox Church in a city close to where I live. For your information, this is a Christian church. However sad any outrage against Muslims is, this one shows it's the ignorant fools who commit them. I can understand that the difference between Muslim Turks and Christian Turks might not be clearly visible to everybody. But the big cross on the church might have been a hint..

Why can a foreigner not point out that Patriotism is wrong? Do we not see it?

Do people want to read about everything that is going on? Two of my favourite LJ writers on the subject are [livejournal.com profile] insomnia and [livejournal.com profile] habibi

You've summed up one of my biggest fears about the current "war"; that it will never be over. There is shockingly little clarity about exactly what the objectives are. Will we stop bombing once bin Laden is dead or in custody? That will certainly not put an end to terrorism. Will we stop once the Taliban is no longer in control of Afghanistan? That seems like a war against the Taliban, rather than against terrorism. If it really is a war against terrorism, it will never stop, since there are more terrorists waiting to take over from each one that is caught or killed. I'm dreading how bad this could get.

No fireman ever assumes that there is going to be a last fire to fight.

No policeman assumes that there will be a last 'collar'.

Terrorism will be a never ending war because there is alway evil in the world.

This should not stop us from fighting. No-one ever believed that there would be an end to the Cold War. Sometime the good guys get to win.

I don't agree with disaproving these jokes. Some may not be that funny, as a matter of taste, but if you point is that one should not make light of a situations like this than I think you're undersestimating the power of humour. I think it can help you cope with this type of thing. If we can laugh about something than I feel that makes it easier to accept the situation, to accept reality. It's difficult to accept, but it is reality and we are going to have to live with it so we might as well try to make the best of it, and banning fun as a matter of principle because of the gravity of the situation? I don't see the point, and it sounds to me that you are not willing to accept a situation, which is your moral right, but I wonder if it's not a denial of the reality of the situation?

I've noticed that my attempt to link some other journals failed miserably. Okay, the two LJ's I tried to mention are:

insomnia

and

habibi

Grappig om viavia (littlegreenfroggie's LJ actually) weer eens een Nederlander tegen te komen.
