What an amazing city. I wouldn´t know where to start, everything around here is worth a visit. From the lovely beaches (even if I am not a fan as you might have read, I can see their beauty), to the people themselves, via a lot of great views from nice places and plenty of culture.
We were lucky to get a great view from the Sugar Loaf, as we found out yesterday when we were up at the statue of Christ overlooking the city. It was a great trainride through a national park to get there, but by the time we were up on the top, it was impossible to see anything, fog blocking all the great possible views. It was quite funny actually, not even while standing at the foot of the statue, were you able to see its arms. Never mind about looking down into the city.
A visit to Brasil isn´t complete if you do not visit a football game, so that´s what we did on sunday. Vasco da Gama, the team Romario plays for these days, beat Figuerense. Great atmosphere, we had a lot of fun watching the people around us in the stadium. And talking about stadiums, today we visited the Maracana, world´s greatest stadium, which at one point had 199.854 people in it to watch Brasil lose to Uruguay. What a piece of history, walk of fame, old pictures and everything included. Unfortunately they are rebuilding parts of it, so there wasn´t any grass to be seen.
This morning we participated in a tour through 2 of the many favella´s here. Not cardboard houses as some might think, but many many houses in a small area, with only small walking alleys inbetween, no roads. Impressive and we learned a lot about druggangs, police, crime and safety.
Too much to tell...
